ESP32 Walkie talkies

I designed and built a pair of ESP32-based walkie-talkies from the ground up to create a functional short-range, half-duplex voice communication system. The project combines embedded hardware, digital audio processing, wireless communication, and custom circuitry.

I designed and 3D printed the cases that house the breadboards. The front is open, with the intent being to show the physical wiring. The potentiometer on top is a volume knob, and the buttons on the front include a push button used for push-to-talk and a 5-way switch used for menu navigation.

The layout of my devices changed overtime. Here we see a closer approximation of what I would finally settle on. See that the microcontroller, user inputs (such as the mic and push to talk) are front facing. The battery, amplifier, and battery charger circuit are all located on the back side.

A Walkie Talkie pair sound test.

An audio test I ran once I was content with the design. Listen to the walkie talkies turn on, my initial proximity to both of them, and then how I walk further away upstairs. Finally, my steps returning down the stairs can be heard as I bring the pair close together again.
