Raspberry Pi Video over IP system

Designed and built a Raspberry Pi–based Video-over-IP system that captures, processes, encodes, and streams video over a Gigabit Ethernet network. Implemented real-time image processing with OpenCV, hardware H.264 encoding and GStreamer streaming, with a Flask web interface for remotely controlling DSP filters. Optimized performance by distributing pixel processing across CPU cores and reducing video resolution to maintain real-time operation.

The basic connections here show the 2 encoder Pis and the single core Pi. The encoders compress the video stream from the Pi camera or device stream, while the core Pi performs signal processing and handles the web UI.

System physical setup.

A supplementary video of the wiring between all components in the system. Note that the switch has Power over Ethernet (PoE) capabilities, meaning the Raspberry Pis only need a single connection for power and data transmission. See how the entire system is connected to a local network by the long yellow ethernet cable.

A simple system diagram.

This diagram shows the connections into the network switch and each Pi's purpose. The 2 Pi's at the inputs are encoders, while the 1 Pi at the end is the decoder. As mentioned before, the Pi labelled core DSP serves as the video processing and UI control center.

Instead of having to work on each Pi's OS to write code, I remoted into each using my laptop. This allowed me to exclusively develop the code for every Pi through VS Code.

A demo for the filters and UI using both the Raspberry Pi camera and the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) input.

The web UI allows quick access to filter options and input choice. See how these filters can apply to either input. Blur and sharpness filters are most easily visible when focusing on the HDMI wall ports when the camera input is active. When the BYOD input is active, the browser URL's sharpness/blurriness can be more easily seen being impacted.
